So, I started to think whether it is possible to teach ESP courses at an Elementary Level. My conclusion is that it is a must. Particularly in the area of carers ( personal care attendants, nursing assistants). In many countries the vast majority of carers of the elderly are off non-English speaking background. It is a demanding enough job without the stress of communication difficulties.
With my student, I have started to review basic grammar structures within short dialogues. Here is an example of the sort of exercise we practise:
Activity 1: Look at these sentences: Remember that you must have a verb in each sentence.
1. I ______________ Australian. (to be)
2. You ___________ Taiwanese. (to be)
3. He _____________in Sydney. (to live)
4. We ____________ a lot of rice. (to eat)
5. She ____________ with me. (to work)
In this unit, we looked at introducing ourselves and talking about present habits. The dialogue is a simple one between a carer and a resident in a nursing home. I am now using Goanimate to make videos as Xtranormal wound up a few months ago. Actually, I prefer Goanimate as I am able to make my own characters and vary the background a lot more than was possible with Xtranormal.
Here is an example of the kind of video I have made for this course. I am careful to only use A1 words using the English Profile website as a guide. This is a useful guide as it ensures that the level does not creep up.
